What Is a Time and a Half Calculator?
A time and a half calculator is an online tool that estimates overtime earnings using your regular hourly wage, overtime hours and a multiplier of 1.5. It helps employees, hourly workers, employers and payroll teams work out an overtime rate without manually calculating every amount.
Our time and a half pay calculator also supports other multipliers, including double time and double time and a half. Enter your regular hours to estimate total gross pay, or enter zero regular hours to calculate overtime earnings alone. You can choose from several currency formats, including USD, GBP, AUD, CAD, EUR and PKR.
How to Work Out Time and a Half
To work out time and a half, multiply the regular hourly rate by 1.5. This gives the hourly rate for the hours paid at that multiplier. Next, multiply the overtime rate by the number of eligible overtime hours.
Overtime rate = Regular hourly rate × 1.5
Overtime pay = Overtime rate × Overtime hours
Total gross pay = Regular earnings + Overtime earnings
For example, if your normal rate is $20 per hour, time and a half is $30 per hour. Five overtime hours at that rate produce $150 in overtime earnings. If you also worked 40 regular hours at $20, your estimated total gross pay would be $950.

Time and a Half Calculator for Hours
A time and a half calculator for hours can help you estimate overtime pay for a short shift or a longer work period. The calculation uses the number of overtime hours entered, so you can estimate different scenarios without changing the formula.
For example, at a regular rate of $25 per hour, the 1.5× overtime rate is $37.50. Four eligible overtime hours produce $150, while eight hours produce $300. These examples assume that the full hours entered qualify for the selected rate.
| Regular rate | Overtime hours | Rate at 1.5× | Overtime pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | 4 | $22.50 | $90 |
| $20 | 5 | $30 | $150 |
| $25 | 8 | $37.50 | $300 |
| $30 | 10 | $45 | $450 |
| $40 | 6 | $60 | $360 |
How to Work Out Double Time
Double time is calculated using a multiplier of 2. Multiply your regular hourly rate by 2 to get the double-time rate, then multiply that rate by the eligible hours.
For example, a regular hourly rate of $20 becomes $40 per hour at double time. Four hours at that rate produce $160 in earnings for those hours. Select 2× in the calculator to estimate the amount.
How to Work Out Double Time and a Half Pay
Double time and a half generally means 2.5 times the regular hourly rate. Multiply the hourly rate by 2.5, then multiply the result by the number of eligible hours.
For example, at $20 per hour, a 2.5× rate is $50 per hour. Three hours at this rate produce $150 in gross earnings. This is different from double time, which uses a 2× multiplier and would produce $40 per hour for the same regular rate.
The terminology and entitlements can vary by workplace and jurisdiction. Confirm the rate that actually applies before using an estimate for payroll.
Time and a Half Calculator for Australia
Australian overtime and penalty rates can depend on the applicable modern award, enterprise agreement, employment contract, classification, industry and circumstances. A single 1.5× multiplier does not apply universally to every worker or every additional hour.
You can select AUD and use this calculator to perform an illustrative pay calculation. However, the currency setting does not apply Australian employment law or identify the correct award rate for your job. Check the relevant Fair Work guidance and your employment instrument to determine your actual entitlement.
When estimating Australian pay, confirm whether the relevant provision concerns overtime, weekend or public-holiday penalty rates, or another allowance. These may have different rules.
Calculate Time and a Half in Different Currencies
This calculator offers multiple currency formats to make displaying estimates more convenient. Available options include US dollars, British pounds, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, euros, Pakistani rupees, Indian rupees, New Zealand dollars, UAE dirhams and other commonly used currencies.
Currency selection changes how the calculated amount is displayed. It does not convert an amount from one currency to another, retrieve live exchange rates or change the underlying arithmetic. Enter your hourly rate in the currency you select.
Time and a Half vs Double Time vs Double Time and a Half
| Pay multiplier | Calculation | Rate on $20/hour |
|---|---|---|
| Time and a half | $20 × 1.5 | $30/hour |
| Double time | $20 × 2 | $40/hour |
| Double time and a half | $20 × 2.5 | $50/hour |
| Triple time | $20 × 3 | $60/hour |
These figures compare mathematical multipliers only. They do not establish which rate an employer must pay. The applicable law or employment agreement determines the entitlement.
